The British Columbia Branch (renamed the Canada Branch) of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers was formally re-established in October 1993 to promote the benefits of ICS membership.
The Members of Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (MICS) are internationally recognized as a mark of professionalism in the shipping business. To become a member, candidates must pass the examinations and satisfy the Controlling Council in England of their suitability.
Fellowship (FICS), which permits a person to be described as a Chartered Shipbroker, is granted to a member who has reached a position of seniority and influence in the shipping world. Membership is now enjoyed by over 3,500 people throughout the world with other institute branches established in Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Kenya, Pakistan, Singapore, South Africa, and Sri Lanka -- as well as 12 branches in the United Kingdom.
The Canada Branch offers 14 correspondence courses and a successful candidate is required to complete seven to be considered for membership. The qualifying examinations, held annually, tests candidates on general subjects relating to shipping plus a choice of specialist papers in such topics as Dry Cargo Chartering, Ship Management, Ship Sale and Purchase, Tanker Chartering, Liner Trade, and Port Agency. |
