<title>“Meeting the needs of the shipping profession in “interesting” times.</title>
			<link>http://www.ics-canada.ca/i/index.php?option=com_content&amp;task=view&amp;id=33</link>
<description>Shipping is going through what Jim Davis, IMIF describes as “interesting” times! Rates are down, margins are tight and get tighter, credit difficult, contracts entered into a few months ago seem less attractive today….
The single most important factor remains the INDIVIDUAL - members of your team – but even more so when one is faced with difficult times such as shipping - the engine of world trade - is experiencing at the moment.
Decision making encompasses many facets –analysis of the relevant market data, understanding of the constraints in which the market has to operate and a good working grasp of the shipping business and its fundamental regulatory and legislative issues. It has to be remembered that however good the analysis etc it is individuals that make decisions. It is argued that professionally qualified individuals are BETTER placed to make BETTER decisions on behalf of themselves and their clients. Investment strategies should include the professional development of one’s staff.
Shipping is the global industry that makes world trade happen. Shipping is a very competitive service industry. It is constantly at work worldwide. The process of moving goods from one side of the world to another requires many people, both ashore and afloat, to work together as a team. The analogy with the weakest link in a chain is relevant. From a purely commercial and competitive standpoint, surely no owner, broker, agent, charterer would wish to be in a chain with a weak link. All the key people in the chain should be able to do their jobs properly and should deserve the respect and trust of the other members of the team. There needs to be a high level of trust and confidence between players within the industry and the industry itself must make its case coherently with its financiers.
So how does an individual or a company build trust and confidence – it has to be based on such factors as knowledge, understanding of the business, company training and education culture, proven track record of having delivered to time/price etc in the past, recommendation and self regulation.
Professionalism is the combination of knowledge, performance and effectiveness plus a business ethic based on integrity and trust.
ICS is the professional body to commercial shipping worldwide. It has since its founding developed a proven record of supporting the industry raise professional standards.
But what does the shipping profession require from its professional body in today’s interesting times?
ICS believes that all executive staff involved in shipping should have sufficient understanding of the legal principles, finance, insurance, economics to be able to be able to hold a mature, workmanlike discussion with respective equivalent professionals in other disciplines. It also believes that it is important that an individual knows the limit or boundary of his/her knowledge. That is, knows when to call for assistance before having to call in the lawyer to bail one out from an inappropriate action! ICS believes that the obverse is true that a recently qualified lawyer should have sufficient knowledge of the shipping business to be able to place their advice into the correct context.
It might be relatively easy to be successful in a booming economy/market. The real test is when an economy consolidates and the tide has turned! This is when a competitive and professional edge is required. Part of that solution is ensuring staff are professionally prepared.
If well trained people are more likely to make BETTER decisions, then it stands to reason that the international market is going to deal with companies that it can trust to do just that - act appropriately in a given situation.
ICS offers a wide range of options for the professional development of individuals - one day lecture programmes, webinars, tutored support, e-learning, bespoke packages across the broad spectrum of the syllabus that reflects the breadth of the shipping sectors – Shipping Business, Legal principles, Economics, Chartering, Broking, Agency, Ship operations, marine insurance.
ICS is a not for profit organisation that is not driven by the commercial bottom line but meeting the demands of its Royal Charter to “promote professionalism in the shipping industry worldwide.”
ICS as the professional body to commercial shipping worldwide is ready to do its bit in helping the profession manoeuvre its way through these “interesting” times. </description>
